the preparing of a yarn, fabric or garment for some sort of next step in processing, which could be dyeing, printing, or finishing. I know with dyeing, certain dyes require mordants or chemicals to bind the fabric or yarn to the dye component. Preparation puts materials in a condition ready for it’s next step of processing.

yarn/fabric preparation steps

sizing in general:

• aka “slashing” or “warp sizing”

• usually consists of a water-soluable film forming polymer and a lubricant

• applied to warp yarns prior to weaving to protect them during weaving

• purpose:

  • reduce friction + improve weaving efficiency (preparation for wovens)
  • protect yarns from damage at high speeds (from the abrasive looms)

• sizing agents

  • chemicals that form the protective coating/film
  • applied as a liquid
  • coated yarn is dried
    • equipment used = slasher

• objective of slashing

  • to improve weaving efficiency of the yarn; weave faster without damaging the fibers due to friction and mechanical forces

    

• functions of a warp size

  • bind together individual fibers in yarn bundle
  • coat surface of the yarn to smooth down protruding fibers (reduce hairiness)
  • from a rough surface to a smooth surface to create ease
